Bojan's operation was performed at the Padua University Hospital in
October 1997, under the supervision of a world renowned
transplantation expert, Japan's Koichi Tanake.
Bojan had been suffering from a malignant liver cancer. His life was
saved when he received part of his father Zdenko's liver.
The operation expedited Italy's passing of legislation on
transplantation of parts of organs from live donors among blood
relations.
Two years ago, the illness Bojan had been treated for in Croatian
and Italian hospitals reappeared. Despite his grave condition, he
successfully completed elementary school this year.
Bojan was also the recipient of a courage medal, given to him
recently by Krizevci mayor Branko Hrg for achievements in school
and the struggle against a serious illness.
