Some ten days ago, the panel of judges in the Lora trial decided to
release the defendants from custody, but the prosecution appealed
against the decision and last Wednesday (31 July) Croatia's Supreme
Court upheld the appeal and ordered the re-detention of the
defendants.
Until Friday morning five of them returned to the custody, and two -
Miljenko Bajic and Josip Bikic - remained at large.
After measures for the search for them gave no results, police
notified the county court in Split, where the trial is being held,
of their futile attempts to find Bajic and Bikic, a spokeswoman for
the Interior Ministry said.
Zinka Bardic confirmed that an investigating judge in Split, Drazen
Penjak, issued the warrant for the arrest of Bajic and Bikic.
The seven defendants, Tonci Vrkic, Davor Banic, Emilio Bungur, Ante
Gudic, Andjelko Botic together with the mentioned Bajic and Bikic,
spent already 10 months in custody before the panel of judges
decided for their release.
They are accused of war crimes they allegedly committed in the Lora
military prison in 1992.
The principal defendant, Tomislav Dujic, a former commander of the
Lora prison, is on the run.
