Following the Council meeting held in Sarajevo, the deputy minister
for civilian issues and communications, Milan Lovric, told
journalists that he expected a final agreement on the micro-
location of the border crossing near Kostajnica to be initialled in
the next 5 days. A solution of this kind will be accepted based on
surveying which will be conducted by a team of Croatian experts as
was agreed previously between the two governments, he said.
As soon as an agreement on the micro-location of the border crossing
is signed, the document should be adopted by the Croatian
government and the Bosnian Council of Ministers. The construction
of the border crossing can commence immediately after.
From the moment that works commence the border could be opened
within 15 days, deputy minister Lovric said. He also explained that
members of the Bosnian state border service did not prevent experts
from the Croatian side to conduct the required surveying on
Wednesday, but only asked that construction machinery be withdrawn
from the contentious location. That was initiated by the fact that
the continuation of works were not planned prior to the final
confirmation of the location of the border crossing.
The Council of Ministers on Thursday also adopted amendments to the
Law on Citizenship which will enable the extension of deadlines for
a bilateral agreement on dual citizenship. The deadline for the
agreement which was to have expired at the end of this year will be
extended for another 5 years. This decision is exceptionally
important, primarily because of a large number of Bosnian Croats
who have in recent years gained Croatian citizenship. According to
the current provisions in the citizenship law, everyone would lose
citizenship from their mother country if the two countries did not
sign an agreement on dual citizenship before the year's end.
