ZAGREB, July 31 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivica Racan on Wednesday
announced that the new government would not postpone uncomfortable
matters but would deal with them immediately. #L#
What he exactly meant by postponing, he explained with the example
of de-regulating petrol prices.
We stalled for a long time over deregulation. When the government
finally worked up enough courage to do so the result was positive.
The price has not changed in over a year, Racan said.
He then noted that the majority of the media was against the
deregulation and the government was at fault for yieldng to public
pressure.
Racan stressed that this time the government would not hesitate in
biting the gun with the gas and electricity prices and would also
implement the deregulation.
He emphasised that any hesitation could be detrimental because a
huge amount would have to be found in the budget to cover the costs
of the Croatian electricity industry, which would not resolve
problems in the field.
The Prime Minister announced that the new government would work
intensively in August.
The government will be faced with several difficult issues related
to losses but also involving development.
The agenda will include tax reliefs and several significant laws.
There are no great surprises. Everyone has seen the government's
programme consisting of 23 binding items and which need to be placed
actively and responsibly Racan stressed. He announced that on
Thursday the government would specify the programme in more detail
- i.e. set deadlines, mentioning that this would involve a great
deal of work for the new ministers.
