SINJ, July 10 (Hina) - The division among citizens of Sinj, the town
in southern Croatia, because of their different views on the
developments in relation to a local tournament "Alka" and Croatian
President Stjepan Mesic's possible rejection of his sponsorship
over it, culminated on Wednesday during local authorities' session
when aldermen of the ruling HDZ and HKDU parties turned down a
proposal of SDP and HSLS. #L#
Social Democrats (SDP), backed by Social Liberals (HSLS), proposed
a motion for the discussion on Alka to be added to the assembly's
agenda. They explained their proposal by the fact that the Society
of Alka Knights (VAD) was financed by funds from the town's budget.
After a long heated debate, the coalition of the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Christian Democratic Union (HKDU)
refused the proposal.
After that SDP and HSLS councillors walked out, and said they would
not come back to the session as long as the motion was not added to
the agenda.
