The HSS claims that the provision of the existing law enabling the
conglomerates to register farmland as their property is contrary to
the constitutionally guaranteed right of family farms' to own
farmland.
That's why the HSS has lodged a request with the Constitutional
Court to assess whether the contentious provision is in compliance
with the Constitution.
The HSS received the support of the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ), while the Social Democrats (SDP) and Social Liberals (HSLS)
were against its proposal.
The SDP bench said it was ready to accept some corrections of the
provision in the sense that conglomerates were enabled to obtain
long-term concessions over farmland through agreement rather than
public tenders.
