NEW YORK, July 4 (Hina) - The United Nations' Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC) on Wednesday evening finished its three-day
session with the unanimous adoption of the so-called ministerial
declaration. #L#
Representatives of 54 ECOSOC member-countries and officials of the
World Organisation and international institutions discussed
education and health as factors of the development, and adopted the
five-page document with mainly generalised conclusions.
It seems that opposite views of the industrialised countries and
developing nations make it impossible for them to reach more
concrete agreement on the eradication of poverty and sustainable
progress.
However, more concrete stands were adopted on the prevention of
AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis as the biggest health problems and
even security threats in some countries.
ECOSOC reiterated that seven to 10 billion dollars annually were
needed for the fight against AIDS.
The developed countries were called to fulfil their commitments
from the Millennium Summit and earmark 0.7 percent of their Gross
National Product for the aid to underdeveloped countries.
The current chairman of the ECOSOC, Croatia's Ambassador to the UN,
Ivan Simonovic, could be satisfied with the attendance of 600
participants at this session.
