ZAGREB, June 27 (Hina) - The Croatian government will forward into
parliamentary procedure a bill prolonging community service from
the current eight to nine months. #L#
The bill referring to persons not willing to do regular military
service of six months due to conscientious objection or moral
convictions was formulated at a government session on Thursday.
The regulation extending community service to nine months was
retained in the bill despite Prime Minister Ivica Racan and
Assistant Defence Minister Zlatko Gareljic's support for the
current duration of community service of eight months.
Community service will be done in hospitals, senior citizens'
homes, companies, various associations, and the bodies of state and
local administration.
Persons doing community service at the Foreign Ministry could be
sent, in line with recommendations by the European Parliament, to
Croatian embassies abroad.
The bill envisages that responsibility for community service would
be transferred from the Justice Ministry to the Labour Ministry.
The Labour Ministry would adopt special regulations, including
those on where community service can be done.
