ZAGREB, June 17 (Hina) - According to a census, conducted between 1 and 15 April 2001, Croatia has a population of 4,437,460, of whom 3,977,171 declared themselves Croatians, accounting for 89.63 percent of the population.

The biggest national minority are Serbs, and they account for 4.54
percent of the population (201,631 persons). #L#
These data were presented at a Monday news conference by Marijan
Gredelj, head of the Central Bureau of Statistics.
The entire population has shrunk by 6.1 percent compared to the
results of the 1991 census.
Persons of working age (between the ages of 20 and 64) make up 60.2
percent of the population.
The census was conducted by more than 25,000 people and in
compliance with Croatian laws, and the European Union and United
Nations recommendations, Gredelj said.
