WTO general director Mike Moore told reporters that the conference
focused on countries negotiating or getting ready to join the WTO,
such as Russia, Macedonia and Yugoslavia. He said Macedonia and
Russia were relatively close to joining the WTO, but declined to
state when negotiations with Yugoslavia would be completed.
Croatian Economy Minister Hrvoje Vojkovic also pointed out the
importance of these countries joining the WTO. He said that Croatia
was accumulating a significant surplus in foreign trade with the
majority of countries in the region which were not WTO members. He
added Croatia was conducting negotiations on free trade agreements
with some non-WTO countries in the region.
Membership in the WTO would facilitate negotiations also at the
regional level, which is why Croatia is ready to support their
approaching the WTO, Vojkovic said.
