Technical assistance and cooperation as well as the strengthening
of institutions are elements of the development of the multilateral
trade system," Ravier said at a discussion held within the Zagreb
event.
He reminded that after the WTO summit meeting in Doha the technical
assistance had became a part of negotiations on aspirants'
admission in the WTO.
Ravier added that important aspects of such assistance were the
strengthening of institutional mechanisms, the adjustment of
national legislation and the education of staff.
Besides it is also important to control the use of funds ensured by
donors so that they may be ready and motivated to raise funds for the
developing aspect of the WTO's activities, he said.
At the moment about 20 million euro is earmarked for this purpose
annually.
Croatia's European Integration Minister Neven Mimica, who was the
country's chief negotiator at the talks on Croatia's admission to
the WTO, stressed that the technical assistance was extremely
valuable for the successful bid of a country to enter the WTO.
Mimica reiterated that Zagreb supported bids of its neighbours and
other countries in the region to join the WTO as soon as possible.
