Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic, who is attending the summit
organised by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), on
Monday afternoon held a speech proposing that the financial means
spent for arms should be used in a war against hunger.
At the Rome event, which will finish on Thursday, poor countries are
asking developed nations to allow the liberalisation of the import
of their goods.
According to a draft final document, the rich countries are asked to
allocate 0.7 percent of the Gross Domestic Product for the
assistance to underdeveloped countries.
Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi has suggested the allocation of
one percent and announced that Italy will stick to this
percentage.
FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf has suggested the establishment
of an international alliance in the fight against hunger and called
on governments, international organisations and the private sector
to join it.
Currently every four seconds one person dies of starvation in the
world.
The participants in the Rome summit agree that it is necessary to
carry out a programme adopted six years ago by the FAO summit on
reducing the number of hungry people in the world from 800 million
to 400 million by 2015.
