Del Ponte said Croatia was cooperating with the tribunal, and that
talks with Croatian officials had addressed models of cooperation.
She stressed the importance of her visit to the eastern town of
Vukovar where she saw the crime sites and talked with the survivors,
i.e. potential witnesses about the Vukovar crimes. Sometimes it is
important to personally see the site, she said.
Last week's visit to Croatia was not related to crimes committed
against Serbs in Croatia, del Ponte said, but added that
exhumations were begun with the Croatian government in the Knin and
Korenica areas, which she said was a sign that the Hague prosecution
was acting in all directions.
Full cooperation with the Hague tribunal implies arresting all
fugitives, 32 in all, access to archives, and helping the tribunal
locate witnesses, said the chief prosecutor. She added she expected
full cooperation with Belgrade, which meant the hand-over of all
indictees.
The arrest of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic is imperative, said
del Ponte, adding that she believed Mladic was in Serbia, hiding.
As for incumbent Serbian President Milan Milutinovic, del Ponte
said putting him on trial in Serbia was not an option. He must be
prosecuted in The Hague, alongside Dragoljub Ojdanic and Nikola
Sainovic, she said.
