With regards to the name of the bridge across the Dubrovnik River,
which will officially be opened tonight, Mesic said that the
problem lay in the lack of coordination, and the question should be
posed to those who were financing and coordinating the construction
of the bridge, the city of Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
The Dubrovnik City Council last month decided to call the bridge
"Dr. Franjo Tudjman", after the late Croatian president, while the
Croatian Roads company named it "Dubrovnik" at the beginning of its
construction. On both sides of the bridge there are two boards with
each name.
"I do not mind the bridge being given any name which symbolises an
event, person or geographic name. The least we need is for one
bridge to have two names," he said.
Asked about the importance of the construction of the Zagreb-Split
highway, Mesic said its significance was immeasurable, since it
connected the continental and Adriatic part of Croatia. "It is the
most important decision made in Croatia in the past 30 years," he
added.
