UN member country representatives endeavoured to respond to the
question of how to realise the protection of rights for women and
children from international law to national reality.
Simonovic advised that during his stay in New York, President
Stjepan Mesic signed supplementary protocols on the protection of
children in war and conflicts as well as on the prohibition of the
sale of children, child prostitution and pornography.
She informed that the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of
Discrimination Against Women was directly implemented in Croatia
and all national legislature is in line with its provisions.
Croatia has an active Committee for the Equality of the Sexes that
prepared a national programme on promoting equality of the sexes in
the period from 2001 to 2005.
On the path between international law and national reality, it is
worth bridging many ridges such as the gap between the lawful and
real protection of every child and woman, said Simonovic. This is
the only way to advance universal human rights for all people and
their societies.
