Somavia and Vidovic met in New York on Wednesday where a special
session of the UN General Assembly on children is being held.
Vidovic informed Somavia of the negotiations between social
partners in Croatia relating to the Labour Act. He pointed out
difficulties due to the fact that some workers rights would need to
be decreased or even completely abolished. Vidovic considers that
these rights are far higher than in any other European country.
Somavia also spoke with the current chairman of the UN Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC) and Ambassador Ivan Simonovic. They spoke
about co-operation between ECOSOC and the ILO as well as the role of
ECOSOC in peace building and diminishing the bad affects of
globalisation. They also spoke about projects that the UN plans to
implement in co-operation with international monetary
institutions.
