Unions should be included in negotiations on amendments to the
labour law, because this is the only way reasonable solutions can be
reached, said Mesic, who arrived in Maksimir privately, without
being officially invited by the organisers.
Mesic told reporters he was not in conflicts with unionists. Union
representatives greeted the President saying the head of state
would not address the present this year.
Asked how come he was the only state official to attend the
ceremony, Mesic said "he was the only one who promised to be the
president of all citizens."
Four union federations are marking this year's Labour Day by
protesting against announced amendments to the labour law. They
believe the amendments will drastically reduce workers' rights.
