ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - The Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) on
Monday forwarded an appeal to the public and non-government
organisations urging them to stage protests and force the
government to withdraw from what it described as an "unreasonable"
agreement with Slovenia on the Krsko nuclear power plant. #L#
The party notes that the Croatian Sabor still has not ratified the
agreement and that citizens still have a chance to put pressure on
MPs and prevent its ratification.
The agreement binds the Croatian government to accept half the
radioactive waste produced by the power plant and store it on its
own territory. This is thousands of tonnes of radioactive cement
and iron from the plant's reactors and hundreds of barrels of used
nuclear fuel, the HSP notes in its appeal.
By signing the agreement, the government has violated its
constitutional obligation to protect Croatia's legal order since
the country's laws prohibit the import of radioactive material, as
is the case in all European countries, the party's statement
reads.
