The seventh HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) general assembly, held
over the weekend, has bolstered the party and those who expected a
split remained disappointed, Ivo Sanader said. He added the
principal task at the moment was to prepare the party for victory at
the next parliamentary elections, as well as cooperation with the
parties of the centre and right centre.
Voters' commissions unanimously accepted the general assembly's
electoral results, Sanader said, adding he did not know what
happened with the ballots.
Journalists asked for a comment on ballots, later found in a garbage
container near the building where the assembly took place, on which
the names of Ivic Pasalic and Ljerka Mintas-Hodak were allegedly
circled.
Sanader said those who did not win should make their mandates
available, including Ivic Pasalic, the head of the Hrvatski Drzavni
Zavjet foundation, and HDZ general secretary Joso Skara.
Asked what was the main difference between him and his counter-
candidates, Sanader said the HDZ with him at the helm was winning.
He said the international reactions to the seventh general assembly
were very good.
Sanader's deputy Jadranka Kosor said the assembly showed
confidence in women. She added she would continue advocating a
stronger role of women in the party and society.
