The three-day strike was enough protesting against the many
injustices done to their husbands, the wives said in a letter. The
strike was an appeal to judicial and political leaders to rectify
the hypocritical decisions of the Croatian judicial system, the
letter added.
Croatian war veterans are detained without legal grounds, while
citizens of Serb nationality are immediately let go with the
explanation that their addresses are known, the wives said in the
letter.
The wives of seven detainees at the Split county prison released a
statement on March 28, saying all seven were on hunger strike. The
prison's administration countered the same day by stating that only
four were on strike.
Eight former military police were indicted on March 27 for war
crimes against Croatian Serb civilians at Split's Lora military
prison in 1992. They have been in custody since Sept. 27, 2001.
