SARAJEVO, March 27 (Hina) - The international High Representative
for Bosnia, Wolfgang Petritsch, said on Wednesday an agreement on
constitutional changes must be implemented and that this had to be
done by the two entities' parliaments.
This agreement and the way in which it was reached have completely
changed the political scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he told
reporters in Sarajevo. The country can now take the path that will
distance it from an ethnic vision of society and transform it into a
civil society, he said.
The steering committee of the council for the implementation of the
Dayton peace agreement today wholly supported the proposed
agreement and demands an urgent implementation, said Petritsch.
He added the agreement ensured the full equality of Bosnia's three
peoples and represented the most important step since the adoption
of the Dayton agreement in 1995.
The agreement is the result of political compromise but does not
undermine the principles of the parties making up the ruling
Alliance for Changes, Zlatko Lagumdzija, the president of the
Social Democrat Party, told the same press conference.
The agreement, once implemented, will undoubtedly ensure the
application of European standards in Bosnia, he said. A very
important aspect is that the agreement gives new hope to refugees
and displaced persons to return to pre-war homes, he said, adding
that in the future, all three peoples would be able to count on the
full protection of all of their rights in both Bosnian entities.
