It is not a good idea to introduce new people into the business at
this time, said Vojko Obersnel, Rijeka City's mayor and a member of
the bank's Supervisory Committee, before a session of the city
government on Tuesday.
Obersnel said management board members submitted their
resignations at yesterday's Supervisory Committee session after a
meeting with government representatives, when the conclusions of
the meeting were already known.
The crisis, which occurred after the discovery that some Rijecka
banka employees embezzled money, may be considered over, Obersnel
said. The bank's assembly will be called after all facts are
established and investigative proceedings completed, he said.
In a statement, the bank's management said the resignations were
not accepted and reiterated that the bank would inform the public
about its transactions -- payment transactions, loans to citizens
and companies, and payments to clients.
Citizens continued to swamp the offices of Rijecka banka on
Tuesday, waiting for hours to withdraw their deposits.
A bank employee suspected of the foul dealings has been detained by
police since March 9. Another employee was arrested on Monday and
questioned today at the Rijeka County Court Investigative Centre.
