ZAGREB, Feb 11 (Hina) - The International Press Institute (IPI) and
the South East European Media Organisation (SEEMO) on Friday
forwarded a letter to Croatian President Stjepan Mesic expressing
deep concern about the Denis Latin case, IPI and SEEMO said in a
statement delivered to Hina on Monday.
According to our sources, the state prosecutor plans to press
charges against Latin under Article 309 of the Croatian Penal Code,
reads the letter.
Croatia has made considerable progress in the media field in the
last several years but laws envisaging punishment for reporting or
comments are open to abuse by public officials and should be
rescinded in order to create a climate in which journalists can
freely research corruption and other illegal activities, the
letter says.
IPI and SEEMO call on President Mesic to initiate measures which
will result in the reconsideration and replacement of such laws
with civil law provisions and the immediate dropping of all
accusations made against anchorman Latin in connection with a
Croatian Television broadcast of his talk-show Latinica on the
state of the Croatian judiciary.
The letter has also been forwarded to Prime Minister Ivica Racan and
parliamentary speaker Zlatko Tomcic.
IPI is a global and SEEMO a regional network of editors, media
directors and leading journalists.
