ZAGREB, Feb 7 (Hina) - Croatian Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic
said on Thursday that he had cancelled his visit to the USA because
his appearance in New York where he was supposed to speak about the
current and future work of the government, would lack credibility.
My present position is such that I cannot be credible in speaking
about the next two years of the government's work, Fizulic said
after a government session.
Asked by reporters about the minister's meeting with the president
of his party, the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), Drazen
Budisa, Fizulic said the talks did not reveal the fate of not only of
HSLS ministers, but also the future of the HSLS.
He said that he was on Tuesday still convinced he would travel to the
US, but after following events, he had realised he could find
himself in an awkward situation and that his visit was
unnecessary.
The minister told reporters he had spoken about the cancellation of
his trip with Prime Minister Racan and the US Ambassador to Croatia,
as well as the Croatian Ambassador to America.
Fizulic declined to comment on the fate of five HSLS ministers if
the party's main committee decides to dismiss some of them.
"We would like to know the reasons for which any of us should leave
our posts, we demand for our work to be assessed and an explanation
of the criteria the committee was making its decisions," he said.
He asserted that the main committee should be allowed to make the
decision, after which the ministers will make their own, as well as
other HSLS members in the executive authority.
The Croatian economic delegation led by Economy Minister Goranko
Fizulic on Wednesday cancelled its visit to the United States
envisioned for February 9 to 15 due to "newly established political
circumstances in Croatia".
The Croatian delegation will still be participating at a Croatian
Energy Conference in Washington on February 13.
