ZAGREB/NEW YORK, Jan 31 (Hina) - A Croatian unionist has taken the
world's leading financiers to task over their dangerous policy in
transitional countries at a World Summit on Sustainable
Development preliminary session on social partnership in New York
on Thursday.
In her introductory address, Jasna A. Petrovic said it was
impossible for various interest groups and unions to have a genuine
effect on the models of development which the World Bank and the
International Monetary Fund, which she called the new masters of
the world, imposed on countries in transition, the International
Confederation of Free Trade Unions said in a statement.
Petrovic maintains the former communist dictatorship models have
been replaced by the dictatorship model of international financial
institutions which make loans and credit ratings conditional on the
deregulation of labour laws, the privatisation of public services,
the reduction of labour rights, and mass layoffs.
Petrovic is the coordinator of the women's network of the
International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and a member of
the Croatian Agricultural Trade Union.
