ZADAR COUNTY COURT EXTENDS DETENTION FOR WAR CRIMES SUSPECT ZADAR, Jan 25 (Hina) - Zadar County Court judge Enka Mokovic on Friday extended detention for Zorana Banic, accused of war crimes in Skabrnja in 1991, for another two months,
explaining the decision with Banic's possible escape and the gravity of the crimes she has been charged with. In 1998, Banic was sentenced in absentia to 20 years in jail, along with another 17 members of former Serb paramilitary forces. The judge has not ruled yet on the date of a re-trial, and Banic's attorneys Luka Susak and Ranko Radovic have requested the exemption of the Zadar County Court. Banic was arrested in Switzerland in October 2001 on the basis of an international warrant. Shortly afterwards she was extradited to Croatia and taken into custody at the Zadar County Court detention centre. A nurse by profession, Banic has been accused of taking part in the killing of 43 civilians in the village of Skabrnja near Zadar.(hina) np
