CATHOLIC WEEKLY ADVOCATES NEW MODEL OF RELATIONS WITH THE WORLD

ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) - The new authorities have to put Croatia on its feet in the economy and culture so that it can be original in its offer to the world and thus become a respectable subject of cooperation and not a dependent subject of subservience, the Glas Koncila Catholic weekly says in its January 4 issue.
ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) - The new authorities have to put Croatia on its feet in the economy and culture so that it can be original in its offer to the world and thus become a respectable subject of cooperation and not a dependent subject of subservience, the Glas Koncila Catholic weekly says in its January 4 issue.#L# In an editorial headlined "For a New Model of Relations with the World", the weekly says Croatia cannot change the international community but can exert influence so that the interest of the international community are "not realised at the expense of Croatian national interests". Glas Koncila goes on to say that as a young country Croatia is constantly under close scrutiny and exposed to the setting of conditions which "sometimes even turn into threats". As a recent example of "mistrust among certain (international) circles", the weekly cites the decision on the extension of the OSCE mandate to 2004. Glas Koncila strongly criticises some international representatives for directly interfering with Croatia's home affairs, "notably after parliamentary elections by meddling... with the formation of the new government". The weekly also notes that government representatives have not reacted to that through diplomatic channels. Glas Koncila says that unlike politicians, the people are not afraid of certain international political circles, and adds that the new authorities have the big responsibility of not separating themselves from the people or subordinating national interests to foreign dictates. The Catholic Church in Croatia advocates good cooperation between the country and the international community, the weekly says, adding that good cooperation means partnership and equality within the scope of international law.
