(SPC), Patriarch Pavle, has supported the establishment of a
constitutional parliamentary monarchy in Serbia. #L#
In a letter sent on Saturday to Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic II
on behalf of the SPC's Holy Synod, Patriarch Pavle said that the
entire history of the Serb people had been marked by Serb rulers and
dynasties. He went on to explain the importance and role of the
Karadjordjevic dynasty in the liberation of Serbia from the Ottoman
rule and in the development of the nation in the first half of the
20th century.
In the second half of the 20th century, "unprecedented tyranny" was
introduced in the country under the guise of democracy, he said,
adding that European countries which had preserved the system of
parliamentary monarchy were progressive and organised states and
true democracies.
The Church believes that the 1945 decision abolishing the monarchy,
as well as many other decisions from that year, are the consequence
of tyranny and should be revoked.
The Church is aware that the restoration of the monarchy is not
within its jurisdiction, but will pray for those who are in charge
of making such decisions, the letter said.
