THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Nov 26 (Hina) - Appeal proceedings in the case of Bosnian Serb general Radislav Krstic, who has been sentenced to 46 years in prison for genocide against Muslims in Srebrenica, started at the U.N. war crimes tribunal
for the former Yugoslavia on Wednesday.
THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Nov 26 (Hina) - Appeal proceedings in the case of
Bosnian Serb general Radislav Krstic, who has been sentenced to 46
years in prison for genocide against Muslims in Srebrenica, started
at the U.N. war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia on
Wednesday. #L#
On 2 August 2001, the tribunal found Krstic guilty of participating
in genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Both the
prosecution and the defence appealed against the verdict.
The defence claims that Krstic was not a member of the Bosnian Serb
army command, which it claims is responsible for the crimes he is
charged with.
The prosecution claims that the verdict does not reflect the
gravity of the crimes and seeks life imprisonment.
NATO forces arrested the 55-year-old Serb on 2 December 1998 in the
Bosnian Serb entity.
Krstic commanded the Drina Corps, which together with other Serb
forces carried out the attack on Srebrenica. After the fall of the
eastern Bosnian town into Serb hands on 11 July 1995, up to 8,000
Muslims were killed or went missing.
