"Since no payments have been made, and we have received no official
notification from the government, we will call on the students in
Zagreb to join their colleages from the dissolved Split Polytechnic
in a protest in St Mark's Square (government offices) on Saturday,"
Students Corps leader Petar Bezjak told Hina on Wednesday.
Scholarship fees were increased by 60 per cent under a decision by
Science and Technology Minister Gvozden Flego in June. The
minister, however, revoked the decision three months later, and the
government pledged a refund to the universities after they
reimbursed the students for the difference in scholarship fees.
Prime Minister Ivica Racan said on Wednesday the government would
discuss how to solve the problem on Friday, adding that the student
protest would certainly not influence the speed of resolving the
problem. He described the announced protest as politically
motivated.
The League of Students of Croatia (SSH) said in a statement on
Wednesday that the call for the protest to be staged on the day on
which a 24-hour moratorium on electioneering would be in effect,
was a political move whose aim was to take advantage of the students
of the defunct Split Polytechnic and those who were not paid the
difference in scholarship fees.
