By coincidence the Babic indictment was issued by the UN war crimes
tribunal today, when the 12th anniversary of Vukovar's fall is
being marked, Racan told reporters at the SDP headquarters in
Zagreb on Tuesday.
Croatia is commemorating the victims of Vukovar and Skabrnja, and
Milan Babic is without any doubt one of the most responsible for
those crimes committed in Croatia, Racan added.
The Croatian PM was also glad to see that speculations that Babic,
who appeared as a protected witness of the prosecution at the
Slobodan Milosevic trial, would be protected from being prosecuted
for war crimes he committed in Croatia, proved to be false.
This testifies to the quality of the Hague tribunal, the SDP chief
said.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
(ICTY) indicted Babic for crimes against humanity and violations of
the law and customs of war, committed from 1 August 1991 to 15
February 1992. The indictment charges him with persecution of
Croats and other non-Serbs from some areas of Croatia in early
1990s.
