Instead of the previous 25-member council, who used to be elected by
institutions and non-governmental associations, the 11 members of
the newly-founded council were appointed by the parliament in
compliance with the results of a public invitation to institutions,
associations and citizens to nominate candidates for the council.
After consultations among parliamentary parties, which lasted
several months, the Sabor appointed members of the programme
council on 17 October this year. The ruling parties nominated six
members and opposition parties five.
Under the law on the HRT, this council, together with the managing
board and the director-general, runs the national radio and
television.
Once it selects candidates, the Programme Council will appoint the
heads of the Croatian Radio (HR), Television (HTV) and the Music
Production. This body is also entrusted with selecting the editors
of news programmes.
According to unofficial reports, the council will initiate
procedure for the appointment of heads of the national television
and radio at the beginning of next year.
