RACAN COMMENTS ON BISHOPS ELECTION MESSAGE

RIJEKA, Nov 12 (Hina) - When voting at upcoming parliamentary elections citizens will appreciate the overall activity and platform of every political party, Social Democratic Party (SDP) president Ivica Racan said in Rijeka on Wednesday.
RIJEKA, Nov 12 (Hina) - When voting at upcoming parliamentary elections citizens will appreciate the overall activity and platform of every political party, Social Democratic Party (SDP) president Ivica Racan said in Rijeka on Wednesday. #L# Answering a question from the press about the message bishops issued on the occasion of the Nov. 23 election, Racan voiced confidence citizens would not be influenced by such messages. The Croatian Bishops Conference called on the faithful on Oct. 30 not to vote for parties advocating the legalisation of abortion, euthanasia, and same-sex unions. Racan applauded the fact that the Catholic Church in Croatia had urged people to go to the polls. He said the SDP did not advocate banning abortion but viewed it as the right to choose. Speaking at a news conference of the SDP-IDS (Istrian Democratic Assembly) coalition, Racan estimated that the SDP would be very successful at the election and said he was looking forward to the success of potential coalition partners. Asked why Slavko Linic, who hails from Rijeka, was on the SDP slate in constituency no. 10, which covers the south of Split-Dalmatia County and Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Racan said he had estimated that a "difficult constituency" such as that one needed a "political fighter" of Linic's calibre. Linic knows a lot about the economy and will be able to compete well with politicians such as Ivo Sanader, Drazen Budisa, or Ivic Pasalic and their knowledge of the economy, said Racan. Damir Kajin of the IDS, the first on the SDP-IDS slate in constituency no. 8, which covers Istria County and part of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, said the coalition would not make the IDS lose on its recognisability nor the SDP on its distinctiveness.
