VUKOVAR, Nov 11 (Hina) - The main hearing in the war crimes retrial
of Ivanka Savic, a Serb of Vukovar, began at the easternmost town's
county court on Tuesday. #L#
The 77-year-old Savic was put on trial at Osijek's county court in
1994, when she was sentenced in absentia to eight years'
imprisonment. At her request, Savic was put on retrial at the county
court in Vukovar. She is not in custody.
According to the indictment, between October 1991 and April 1992
Savic pointed out Croats and other non-Serbs who were defending
Vukovar at the warehouse of the Velepromet company, took part in the
intimidation of Croats, and took furniture and other valuables from
Croats' houses.
Savic refuted the claims made in the indictment, saying that she was
"not guilty of anything" and that together with her daughter she too
was a war victim. She said she had been expelled from Vukovar as an
Ustasha in April 1992.
The trial resumes on December 8 when the first witnesses are due to
take the stand.
