BELGRADE, Oct 30 (Hina) - Three persons were injured in a clash
between police and members of the Serbian Federation of Independent
Trade Unions in Belgrade on Thursday, the second day of a union
protest, official sources have said. #L#
The incident happened when several hundred police and gendarmerie
members tried to prevent the unionists from approaching the Serbian
parliament building. Using shields, the police pushed away about
1,000 protesters from the building.
The union demands that the Serbian government resign, call
extraordinary parliamentary elections, and impose a moratorium on
privatisation.
Due to the conflict between the police and the protesters, deputies
of the Party of Serb Unity (founded by Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan) and
the Democratic Party of Serbia of Vojislav Kostunica, walked out of
today's parliament session which addressed a proposal by the
Serbian Radical Party of ICTY indictee Vojislav Seselj to give the
government a vote of no confidence. The same proposal was put
forward by Kostunica's party.
Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic, who submitted a report on
the government's 1,000 days to parliament, told reporters that it
was not normal "for unions to make political demands".
