THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Oct 30 (Hina) - Stephane Bourgon, the new president of the Association of Defence Counsel practising before the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague (ADC-ICTY), said on Thursday that the ICTY's "exit strategy" could
be successful only if the rights of the ICTY indictees were fully respected.
THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Oct 30 (Hina) - Stephane Bourgon, the new
president of the Association of Defence Counsel practising before
the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague (ADC-ICTY), said on Thursday
that the ICTY's "exit strategy" could be successful only if the
rights of the ICTY indictees were fully respected. #L#
Members of the association firmly believe that the exit strategy
cannot and will not succeed unless its impact on the rights of the
ICTY indictees is entirely taken into consideration, Bourgon told a
weekly news conference in The Hague on Wednesday.
Under the strategy, which was presented by ICTY president Theodor
Meron and confirmed by the UN Security Council, all first-instance
trials must be completed by 2008, and appeal procedures by 2010.
According to Bourgon, this is why the ADC's main objective in the
upcoming period will be to enable defence counsel consultations in
every stage of the trial and give defence attorneys an opportunity
to present their standpoints and contribute to the success of the
exit strategy.
