ITALY: CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES TO DEBATE CROATIA'S ECOLOGY-FISHING ZONE

ROME, Oct 28 (Hina) - The foreign affairs committee of the Italian parliament's Chamber of Deputies will discuss Croatia's proclamation of an ecological and fishing zone in the Adriatic Sea on Thursday.
ROME, Oct 28 (Hina) - The foreign affairs committee of the Italian parliament's Chamber of Deputies will discuss Croatia's proclamation of an ecological and fishing zone in the Adriatic Sea on Thursday. #L# A group of MPs have written to the Foreign Ministry asking which political or diplomatic action has been or will be taken as part of Italian-Croatian relations in connection with the proclamation. The answer is expected on October 30. The letter says that, in terms of economy, the Adriatic is a delicate area due to fishing, and that the exploitation and renewal of fish stocks demands harmonised and joint management by all Adriatic countries. The letter goes on to say, among other things, that by unilaterally proclaiming exclusive fishing rights Croatia intends to expand jurisdiction over waters that until now have been international. The letter recalls that the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 stipulated that an economic fishing zone should be determined by agreement. The Italian deputies stress that no Mediterranean country has proclaimed such a zone in a closed sea. The letter asks what the Italian government intends to do within the European Union with regard to Croatia's decision, which it says endangers Italian fishermen. (hina) ha
