He spoke at an international seminar on the position of retired and
elderly persons in society taking place on the northern Adriatic
isles of Brijuni.
Vidovic said the minimum pensions would be paid to about 100,000
uninsured old people with no income at all, which would cost some
300 million kuna annually.
The government cleared 15 billion of a 35 billion kuna debt owed to
pensioners by October, the minister said, adding that the incumbent
government's aim was to make sure by the end of the next term of
office that pensions should not fall below 50 percent of the average
salary.
The three-day seminar has pooled about 50 participants. It was
initiated by the Italian SPI-CG pensioners' union and has been
organised by said union, the European Federation of Retired and
Elderly Persons, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of
Croatia, and the Union of Retired Persons of Croatia.
