Following consultations among parites, which took several months,
MPs supported the nominations made by the informatisation and media
committee, and appointed the 11 members of the HRT Programme
Council. Six candidates were proposed by the ruling parties and
five by the opposition.
During a heated debate, opposition MPs complained that no
representative of the Matica Hrvatska (Croatian Cultural Society)
or the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Writers'
Society was appointed to the council. Deputies of the ruling Social
Democratic Party (SDP) replied that the opposition could have
proposed representatives from said institutions instead of
nominating two publishers and two actors.
The debate turned into a quarrel between Nenad Stazic of the SDP and
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) deputies Jadranka Kosor and Ivo
Sanader. Sabor President Zlatko Tomcic intervened, calling on the
three MPs to defuse the tension and stop discrediting themselves in
the public.
After the harsh debate, the decision on the appointments was made
almost unanimously.
