ZAGREB, Oct 16 (Hina) - The state needs to ensure 19.4 million kuna next year for the implementation of a national programme for the Roma, which the government adopted today. #L# The programme is aimed at providing systematic support to the Roma so that they would be able to improve their living conditions, Deputy Prime Minister Ante Simonic said. According to the 2001 census, a total of 9,463 Romany live in Croatia. However, according to other estimates, their number ranges between 30,000 and 40,000. The Romany people are significantly marginalised in almost all social and public professions, conditions they live in are below the average standards of the rest of the country's population and other national minorities. The national programme defines measures aimed at helping the Roma to integrate in society and the political life, preserving their tradition and culture, and promoting their education, employment and health and social care. The government also adopted a programme on the development of small businesses for 2003-2006. In the past three years, more than 8,500 projects worth over 5.3 billion kuna were carried out, said Deputy Minister of Trades, Small and Medium-Sized Businesses Ivan Knok. 1 EUR = 7.59 kuna (hina) it sb
