The SDP leader and Croatian Premier Ivica Racan and some ministers
from his cabinet, who are senior party officials, participated in
the rally answering questions of citizens about many field of
everyday life as well as about Croatia's prospects of entering the
European Union.
Asked about a climate in Brussels which he visited on Thursday when
he handed over Croatia's answers to the European Commission's
questionnaire about EU membership, Racan said "they (Croatian
delegation) were welcomed by sunny but not very warm weather,"
explaining that he was also speaking figuratively.
"We enjoy the support of officials of the European Union. If we do
our part of the job on time, we shall become an EU member as
planned," Racan said referring to 2007 as year when he believes
Croatia will join the Union.
During a debate on compensation for or reconstruction of houses and
cottages, damaged during the war, Racan said the Croatian
Constitution guarantees that all citizens, both Croatians and
members of ethnic minorities, have the right to compensation. He
added that Croatia could not pay the full amount of war damages,
given that no country which had been stricken by a war had been able
to do so.
