POZEGA, Oct 7 (Hina) - The discontent of neighbouring countries with Croatia's decision to proclaim a fishing and ecological zone in the Adriatic Sea and certain verbal threats "do not have much importance because there are similar
cases round the world," Environment Minister Ivo Banac said on Tuesday during a visit to Pozega, 150 km east of Zagreb.

"I think we can also live without the European Union if we organise
our country in the best possible way. It's not good if the EU becomes
a myth. We must approach this issue realistically, because the EU is
actually the unity of opposites, with member countries competing
over their national interests," Banac told a press conference. "It
is very naive to think that the EU solves all problems," he added.
Speaking of forthcoming parliamentary elections, Banac said his
Liberal Party would most probably participate on its own or in a
coalition with some non-parliamentary parties.
