About 3,000 women, children and the elderly of the German national
minority were detained at the former Yugoslav camp up to April 1946,
while 1,076 casualties were recorded even though it is estimated
the figure was higher by several hundred more, union representative
Nikola Mak told reporters.
They were the "victims of collective guilt for the Nazi crimes," he
said.
Mak recalled the Valpovo labour camp was set up in 1944 under a
decision of then Yugoslavia's Anti-Fascist Assembly which banished
all Germans from the former federation. Until they were banished,
the Germans were detained in forced labour camps.
The monument in Valpovo will be unveiled on Saturday.
