Myers was speaking at a news conference at the US base "Eagle" in the
northern town of Tuzla on Thursday. The US general is visiting
troops in the international Stabilisation Force in the country.
The US general previously visited Kosovo, where he stated that the
Pentagon was considering the possibility of leaving peace missions
in the Balkans to European countries.
A day earlier "The Financial Times" reported that Washington was
seriously considering to stop sending US soldiers to Bosnia-
Herzegovina and Kosovo so that more soldiers could be sent on peace
missions like the one in Iraq.
At the press conference in Tuzla, Myers only said that the possible
transfer of the United States' leading role in the Balkans to the
European Union was a serious issue which was being considered by all
those involved in the process, and that the final decision would be
made within regular NATO procedure.
At present, the US has 135,000 US troops in Iraq and some 1,500 in
Bosnia-Herzegovina.
