CONST. COURT DISMISSES 2 REQUESTS FOR ASSESSMENT OF ELECTORAL LAW

ZAGREB, Sept 17 (Hina) - The Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed as unfounded two proposals on the assessment of the constitutionality of a law on the election of MPs, saying that the right and the duty of each voter, including members of national minorities, to vote only once at elections, was not disputable.
#L# Constitutional Court judges unanimously decided that the Italian Union from Rijeka and the Serb People's Council from Zagreb, which moved for the assessment of the constitutionality of the provision under which it is the voter's right and duty to vote only once, made a mistake claiming that this limited the minorities' general and special right to vote. According to a Court judge, Jasna Omejec, the contested provision contains universally and generally accepted principle under which voters are allowed to vote only once at an election. Also dismissed as unfounded was a proposal submitted by the Italian Union and the Serb People's Council to assess the constitutionality of the contested provision in relation to the Constitutional Law and the Law on the Election of MPs. The Court said the two laws were organic and of equal value and it was not the task of this court to assess the mutual compatibility of the laws. (hina) it ms
