Chris Patten arrived in Kosovo on Wednesday evening and advocated
launching dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. #L#
Patten said that Kosovo's drawing closer to European Union values
was in the interest of both sides.
Talks and dialogue are irreplaceable, said Patten, adding that
practical issues, such as the power and transport sectors, should
be discussed first. Citizens cannot be fed with political rhetoric,
Patten said without specifying when dialogue between Belgrade and
Pristina would start.
The European commissioner arrived in Kosovo together with U.N.
Civil Administrator to Kosovo Harri Holkeri.
Holkeri said he was an optimist, adding that he expected the
dialogue to start in the near future.
Later today, Patten will hold talks with representatives of Kosovo
institutions and ethnic communities. He is also scheduled to
address Kosovo MPs.
