LJUBLJANA, Aug 20 (Hina) - The Slovene government believes it is
possible to cover debts of Ljubljanska Bank Zagreb to its Croatian
clients from the bank's claims from Croatia, the Slovene
government's commissioner for succession to the ex-Yugoslavia,
Rudolf Gabrovec, told Slovene Radio Wednesday. #L#
This was relayed as Slovenia's official offer to Croatian President
Stjepan Mesic during his last visit, but the issue is still current
and should be brought up again, he said.
Gabrovec said he had informed all Slovene ministers of the issue.
"Ljubljanska Bank Zagreb owes its clients EUR270 million, which is
also the amount it is claiming," Gabrovec said, adding he could not
concede to a compromise as recently suggested by the opposition
leader, Janez Jansa.
Jansa suggested that the problem of the debt to Croatian clients of
the bank be paid from a "solidarity fund" to which Slovene banks and
the European Union would contribute.
