From Brac, where he is spending his holidays, Racan travelled to Vis
and the island of Bisevo, where a fire recently consumed 80% of
land, Croatian Radio reported.
Asked by reporters if by Friday the government would give
guarantees for the payment of wages to Viktor Lenac's workers, as
reportedly promised, Racan said this would depend on the readiness
of the owner and creditor banks to help the shipyard.
Asked if it was possible to prevent the disastrous consequences of
fires that have recently been raging in coastal areas, Racan said
both municipalities and counties, as well as the state, should have
done more.
He hoped that local authorities would prepare good fire prevention
programmes, which would be supported by the state.
Racan informed reporters that the bank account of the Slobodna
Dalmacija daily had been unblocked and announced privatisation of
the daily, adding that "an invitation to bid will prevent a media
monopoly".
