"This case should not be exaggerated. It was an isolated case of
violence," Ahmed Bakr, charge d'affaires at the Egyptian Embassy,
told Hina.
Zagreb police reported that two unidentified youths had beaten up
and slightly injured an 11-year-old son of an Egyptian Embassy
official.
The son of Hassan Gomaa was assaulted outside his apartment in
Zagreb's Tresnjevka district at about 1700 hours on Wednesday. The
assailants punched and kicked the boy, but he managed to escape.
Stressing that he had full confidence in the Croatian police, Bakr
said that most of Croatian citizens were open to foreigners and
ready to help them.
Bakr sent a note to the Croatian Foreign Ministry to inform it of the
incident, and talked to Deputy Prime Minister Ante Simonic.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Natalija Bukovec strongly condemned
the attack, saying that it was an act of vandalism rather than
racism.
She said that the Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with the
Interior Ministry, would provide Egyptian Embassy staff with all
the necessary assistance, including stepping up security measures
to protect their residences.
