Minister for European Affairs Janez Potocnik told the national

Potocnik says that as of May 2004, after Slovenia together with
other central and eastern European countries joins the EU, its
citizens would no longer need to undergo customs control at borders
with Italy, Austria and Hungary. He added, however, Slovenes would
have to undergo police control.
The regime will be valid until Slovenia gains membership of the
Schengen Agreement, which is expected in 2006. After that, identity
control at the said borders would be only occasional, within the
frameworks of the struggle against crime and illegal migration.
Potocnik said that the introduction of the Schengen regime on the
external EU frontier with Croatia also depended on Hungary which
must conduct preparations for the adoption of the Schengen
standards.
